{"id":14105,"date":"2021-04-23T00:00:00","date_gmt":"2021-04-22T22:00:00","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/business.uc3m.es\/\/news\/a-new-study-by-maria-jose-sanchez-bueno-and-fernando-munoz-bullon-examines-the-relationship-between-family-ownership-of-the-company-and-employee-protection\/"},"modified":"2021-04-23T00:00:00","modified_gmt":"2021-04-22T22:00:00","slug":"a-new-study-by-maria-jose-sanchez-bueno-and-fernando-munoz-bullon-examines-the-relationship-between-family-ownership-of-the-company-and-employee-protection","status":"publish","type":"news","link":"https:\/\/business.uc3m.es\/en\/news\/a-new-study-by-maria-jose-sanchez-bueno-and-fernando-munoz-bullon-examines-the-relationship-between-family-ownership-of-the-company-and-employee-protection\/","title":{"rendered":"A new study by Mar\u00eda Jos\u00e9 S\u00e1nchez Bueno and Fernando Mu\u00f1oz-Bull\u00f3n examines the relationship between family ownership of the company and employee protection."},"content":{"rendered":"<p style=\"margin: 0cm;\" times=\"\" new=\"\" roman=\"\" serif=\"\" rgb=\"\" justify=\"\" baseline=\"\" color:=\"\" text-align:=\"\" line-height:=\"\" vertical-align:=\"\">According to the authors of this paper, recently published in the <span style=\"outline: 0px; border: 1pt none windowtext; padding: 0cm;\">Journal of Family Business Strategy<\/span><span style=\"outline: 0px;\">, workforce reduction is a crucial decision that transcends the boundaries of the company and has profound social implications. \u201cWhile staff cuts have a key impact on any organization, their importance may be even greater in the specific case of family businesses, which are large employers worldwide,\u201d the study notes.<o:p><\/o:p><\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"margin: 0cm 0cm 6pt;\" times=\"\" new=\"\" roman=\"\" serif=\"\" rgb=\"\" justify=\"\" baseline=\"\" color:=\"\" text-align:=\"\" line-height:=\"\" vertical-align:=\"\" outline:=\"\">For the analysis, they relied on a sample of companies composed of 4,134 companies during the period between 1993 and 2016. \u201cOur results highlight that family businesses are more reluctant to carry out reductions in the number of employees,\u201d says one of the researchers, Mar\u00eda Jos\u00e9 S\u00e1nchez Bueno, professor of the Department of Business Economics at UC3M and deputy director of the Institute for the Development of Companies and Markets (INDEM). <o:p><\/o:p><\/p>\n<p style=\"margin: 0cm;\" times=\"\" new=\"\" roman=\"\" serif=\"\" rgb=\"\" justify=\"\" baseline=\"\" color:=\"\" text-align:=\"\" line-height:=\"\" vertical-align:=\"\" outline:=\"\"><span style=\"outline: 0px; border: 1pt none windowtext; padding: 0cm;\">Export and job reduction<\/span><span style=\"outline: 0px;\"><o:p><\/o:p><\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"margin: 0cm 0cm 6pt;\" times=\"\" new=\"\" roman=\"\" serif=\"\" rgb=\"\" justify=\"\" baseline=\"\" color:=\"\" text-align:=\"\" line-height:=\"\" vertical-align:=\"\" outline:=\"\">This research also suggests indications that under certain circumstances, such as a greater international presence on the part of the company via export, the lower propensity of family businesses towards staff reductions would have to be qualified. Specifically, a higher level of sales through exports to areas geographically close to the country of origin of the family business would further reduce its propensity towards staff cuts, as the negative consequences for the company of such cuts would intensify (for example, in terms of loss of reputation and credibility in the market of origin). <o:p><\/o:p><\/p>\n<p style=\"margin: 0cm 0cm 6pt;\" times=\"\" new=\"\" roman=\"\" serif=\"\" rgb=\"\" justify=\"\" baseline=\"\" color:=\"\" text-align:=\"\" line-height:=\"\" vertical-align:=\"\" outline:=\"\">On the contrary, when the family business directs its exports to countries geographically further away from its national scope, the adverse impact of staff reduction practices for the firm is weaker. \u201cOur results reveal that the negative effects for the family business derived from staff reductions are less apparent when the scope of the company&#8217;s exports can be more global, specifically, when exports are directed towards geographically more distant markets,\u201d the authors conclude.  <o:p><\/o:p><\/p>\n<p style=\"margin: 0cm;\" times=\"\" new=\"\" roman=\"\" serif=\"\" rgb=\"\" justify=\"\" baseline=\"\" color:=\"\" text-align:=\"\" line-height:=\"\" vertical-align:=\"\" outline:=\"\">Bibliographic reference: Cirillo, A,.
