MSCI (Formerly KLD)

Data Summary

In 1991, the MSCI ESG KLD STATS universe initially comprised the components of the MSCI KLD 400 Social Index and the S&P 500. The MSCI ESG KLD STATS time series expanded its coverage in 2001 to include the top 1000 U.S. companies by market capitalization, as of December. In 2003, it expanded its coverage to include the top 3000 U.S. companies by market capitalization, as of December of each year. Finally, the MSCI ESG KLD STATS time series expanded its coverage in 2013 to include non-U.S. companies.

Summary of the data contained in each annual MSCI ESG KLD STATS spreadsheet:

  • Company identification information (name, stock ticker, CUSIP)
  • Strength and concern ratings for approximately 80 indicators within seven qualitative thematic areas, including:
  1. Community
  2. Corporate Governance
  3. Diversity
  4. Employee Relations
  5. Environment
  6. Human Rights
  7. Product
  • Concerns about six controversial business issues: alcohol, gambling, firearms, military, nuclear power, and tobacco.
  • Summary of counts for each of these 13 areas.
