Isabel Gutiérrez es Catedrática de Organización de Empresas del Departamento de Economía de la Empresa de la Universidad Carlos III de Madrid desde 1993. Es doctora en Economía de la Empresa por la Universidad de Sevilla, dónde se había licenciado en Ciencias Económicas y Empresariales. Ha sido profesora titular en la Universidad de Sevilla y profesora visitante en Arizona State University.
Su docencia se concentra en dirección general, teoría y diseño organizativos, tanto en cursos de licenciatura como en el programa de doctorado. Sus intereses investigadores están centrados en la teoría organizativa y la dirección estratégica. Sus investigaciones exploran la dinámica competitiva temporal y espacial, y sus efectos sobre los resultados de las organizaciones que afrontan innovaciones internas radicales, cambios institucionales y discontinuidades tecnológicas.
Sus trabajos han sido publicados en revistas de referencia en el campo de la dirección de empresas como the Academy of Management Journal, Organization Studies o the Academy of Management Review. Además de la docencia y la investigación, Isabel ha colaborado en varias revistas y asociaciones académicas. Ha sido la editora de la revista Management Research hasta comienzos de 2007, y ha pertenecido a los consejos editoriales de las revistas Journal of Management, European Management Review, Journal of Management and Governance, the Journal of High Technology Management Research, M@n@gement, Revista de Empresa, y Revista Europea de Economía y Dirección de Empresas.
Ha sido vicepresidente de la European Academy of Management (2000-2007) y de Iberoamerican Academy of Management (1998-2004) yal. Isabel fue directora del departamento de Economía de la Empresa de la Universidad Carlos III durante el periodo 1996-2001. Actualmente, Isabel es Vicerrectora de Estudios de la Universidad Carlos III.
